IS THERE A TRAFFIC CIRCLE IN YOUR FUTURE?
WELCOME TO "TRAFFIC CALMING"
"Traffic Calming" is the latest concept in traffic engineering and defined as the introduction of median islands and/or traffic circles to existing arterial/collector streets to slow traffic for safer pedestrian/driver environments. By design, these features narrow the flow of traffic down to one lane in each direction BEFORE drivers are required to enter and navigate a traffic circle.
Generally, these features compliment the surroundings and are landscaped to blend into the neighborhood environment.
Traffic calming is used extensively throughout Europe, most notable in England, Holland and the Scandinavian countries, and Australia.
A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that there were 76% fewer injury crashes and 39% overall crashes at traffic circles than at conventional intersections.
I went to school in Boston (B.U.) and I thought that getting out of a rotary circle was worth your life!!!
Here are some examples of Calming from the Portland area:
